"Here I could see myself as a manicure", Ana Carolina, Pedro Kauan's mother, said, she got to carry out her dreams and change her life, after entering Saúde Criança’s program.

Only a few months old, Pedro Kauan was diagnosed as having West Syndrome and psychomotor delays. His mother, 29 years old, Ana Carolina, could not afford the medicines that he needed, she worked as a cleaner.  Besides him, she has other two children to take care of, Ketelyn Yasmin, 14 years old, and Ana Kelly, 9. Thus, the Hospital da Lagoa sent Pedro Kauan’s family to Saúde Criança.

The family lives in the community “City of God”, in  Rio de Janeiro’s west zone. They had survived so far with the alimony from the father and with Ana Carolina’s cleaning work, but that was not enough to support her and the children.  Besides the financial problems, she deals with the daily violence at the community they live, what ends up by affecting her work.

Some months after entering Saúde Criança, Ana Carolina was referred to the manicure course, of the Vocational Training Program. Then, she benefited from the Housing  Program, that helped her by building her own parlor to attend customers, and now she has more flexibility to take care of her son.

Currently, Pedro Kauan is three years old and presents improvements thanks to the dedication of his mother that takes him to physical therapy, phonoaudiology and to swimming classes, activities that are part of the treatment recommended by his pediatricians. “My son did not walk or talk, I had never seen his smile. It was through Saúde Criança’s projects that my life has changed and his health got better”, she reminds.

Nowadays, Ana Carolina owns her business and most of the family’s income comes from her parlor. This dedicated and hardworking mother reminds her beginning at Saúde Criança. “My mind was too closed, I had dreams but I did not know how to carry them out, I had no conditions or opportunities. Here, I found this opportunity to change my life, to have my dreams coming true”, she said.
